From the New World: Dvořák, Karpman & Beethoven

National Philharmonic opens its 2026–2027 season with a concert led by conductor Carolyn Kuan and featuring pianist Inon Barnatan. The program pairs Laura Karpman’s *All American* with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and concludes with Dvořák’s expansive Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

Karpman’s *All American* interweaves themes from patriotic songs by Mildred Hill, Emily Wood Bower, and Anita Owen as a tribute to women’s advancement. Barnatan returns to the National Philharmonic for Beethoven’s powerful C-minor concerto, a work noted for its combination of classical poise and emerging Romantic intensity. The evening ends with Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, shaped by North American Indigenous and folk influences as well as the composer’s impressions of the wide-open Iowa prairie.
