Indigo & Shibori 101 Workshop

Indigo & Shibori 101 Workshop is a hands-on dyeing class led by natural dyer Sophie Kanter at Rhizome DC on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Participants will learn to make and manage an indigo vat, dye fabric for long-lasting color, and tie shibori patterns (Japanese tie-dye) to create a variety of beautiful designs. The workshop covers everything from setting up the vat to caring for finished indigo-dyed items, and each participant receives one bandana to dye. Attendees are encouraged to bring additional small to medium items made of 50% or more natural fiber to dye as well.

When: Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Instructor: Sophie Kanter, whose practice focuses on seasonal, foraged natural dyes and slow fashion. She began dyeing in 2014, studied in the San Francisco Bay Area textile community, and now teaches at a Montessori school while continuing her own art practice. Her website is www.thebluesti.com.
Materials: All materials are provided, including one bandana per participant. You may bring a few additional small to medium items to dye—natural-fiber items (cotton, linen, silk, wool) work best.
What to Bring: Wear clothing you don’t mind getting stained. An apron and rubber gloves are optional but recommended.
Ages: Not specified; likely suitable for teens and adults given the use of indigo vat.
