A SPARK OF CONSCIOUSNESS: Healing The Soul is Laurence Elle Groux’s first solo exhibition. Presented at Transformer as part of its cultural partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland in the United States, the exhibition brings together stoneware ceramic sculptures and oil pastel etchings that give physical form to emotional and spiritual experiences.
Groux’s work explores introspection, love, hate, wisdom, awakening, hope, fear, solace, and innocence. Drawing on ancient hieroglyphs, sacred symbols, mythology, Renaissance art, Modernism, and Outsider Art, the exhibition brings her sculpture and drawing together for the first time in one presentation. Her works invite viewers to consider experiences that are difficult to express in words and to find reflection, healing, and hope through the encounter.

Background: Groux began her Healing Circles oil pastel etchings in 2018 after a serious physical injury left her unable to move her neck or make art for nearly a year. The small drawings became part of her physical and creative recovery. In 2020, her sculpture Becoming led to the related works Hope and Fear and helped establish her ongoing Abstract Nouns series, which seeks to give tangible form to concepts that cannot be directly experienced through the senses.
Artist’s Practice: Groux is a self-taught, introspective artist whose work is rooted in the human psyche. Born and raised in a small village in Switzerland, she moved to the United States in 1996 and has lived and worked in New York City ever since.
Artist’s Background: Groux’s work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Switzerland, and Philadelphia. Her art is held in collections in Pennsylvania, New York, California, Switzerland, Canada, and Mexico. Her work has also been selected for two separate Greenwich Art Society group exhibitions by curators affiliated with the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Personal Context: After being diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in 2022, Groux described the experience as a profound part of her artistic and spiritual journey. The exhibition reflects her belief that pain, stillness, uncertainty, and creativity can contribute to healing and transformation.
