Portrait of Lloyd Patterson

The exhibition *Portrait of Lloyd Patterson* at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens presents a striking painted portrait of Lloyd Walton Patterson (1910–1942), an African American artist who traveled to Soviet Russia in 1932 to participate in the film *Black and White*. Although the film project was canceled, Patterson remained in Moscow and lived a remarkable life, becoming part of a broader history of Black Americans finding opportunity and community in the Soviet Union. The portrait, a long-term loan from a private collector, is displayed alongside works from Marjorie Merriweather Post’s collection, offering a new dimension to Hillwood’s Russian art holdings by highlighting the diverse stories and experiences of Black people in imperial and Soviet Russia. This focused exhibition also celebrates Patterson’s connection to Post’s yacht, the *Sea Cloud*, and an important chapter of African American maritime and artistic heritage.

Exhibition Details: The portrait of Lloyd Patterson is on view as a long-term loan from Andrew Leddy, who purchased the painting from a Moscow antique shop in 1992.
