Sillygander

Sillygander is an interactive improv experience presented by Resonance Improv Alliance at Dolley Madison Library. Designed as a welcoming midweek break in Northern Virginia, it combines a beginner-friendly workshop with a live improv jam, giving attendees a chance to participate, learn foundational techniques, and watch local performers create scenes from audience suggestions.

The evening is intended for people who are new to improv as well as experienced community players. Its spontaneous comedy may include mature material, but the atmosphere is described as supportive, collaborative, and community-focused.

Showtimes: The introductory workshop begins at 6:15 pm, followed by the improv jam at 7:10 pm. The event runs until 8:00 pm.

Format: Part one is an approximately 60-minute introductory workshop for absolute beginners and people curious about improv. It uses group games and foundational exercises to explore active listening, spontaneous agreement, the “Yes, And” principle, and trust between scene partners. Part two is a live jam featuring local independent ensembles, experienced community players, and workshop participants who volunteer to perform.

Lineup: Instructors come from the Resonance network. The jam includes local indie ensembles, veteran community improvisers, and graduates of the workshop. Improvisers may volunteer to lead the jam through the event’s volunteer portal.

Tickets: Free. No donations or solicitation will take place at the event.

Registration: Preregistration through Eventbrite is required because space is limited. The event website is sillygander.eventbrite.com.

Ages: Intended for ages 16 and older.

Content: Because the performances are improvised, the material is unpredictable and generally falls somewhere between a PG-13 and R-rated level.

Parking: Ample parking is available on site at the library.

Late arrival: Latecomers may join after the event has started. Attendees are asked to knock loudly when arriving.
