Jalen Ngonda: Doctrine of Love Tour
Jalen Ngonda brings his Doctrine Of Love Tour to 9:30 Club in support of his second album, *Doctrine Of Love*. His music draws deeply from classic soul while reshaping its sounds for the present, combining vintage-inspired arrangements, expressive songwriting, guitar, piano, and a striking falsetto.
Ngonda’s live performances unite his skills as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and showman. His influences include Motown, Stax, Northern soul, gospel, doo-wop, blues, funk, and mid-century pop, with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, David Ruffin, James Brown, and Al Green informing his approach. The concert will also feature Brooke Combe.

About the artist: Born and raised in Maryland near Washington, DC, Ngonda discovered soul music as a child after hearing the Temptations. He is self-taught on guitar, drums, and keyboards, studied music at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and later developed his career in London. His path has taken him from street performances and small clubs to major festivals and concert halls. He has collaborated with Gorillaz and Jordan Rakei and supported Thee Sacred Souls, Freddie Gibbs, and Olivia Dean.
Music: *Doctrine Of Love* builds on Ngonda’s 2023 debut, *Come Around And Love Me*, with a tightly focused blend of classic soul and modern sensibility. The album moves between upbeat dance-floor songs, gospel-tinged crescendos, orchestral arrangements, funk grooves, and more reflective ballads about love and heartbreak. Ngonda describes the record as drawing on mid-century New Orleans music, girl groups, folk rock, and the late-1960s sound.
