Ellis Paul

Ellis Paul performs with Shanna in a Dress in the Jammin Java/Union Stage Presents 25th anniversary concert series. Paul is a singer-songwriter whose work examines human relationships, hope, heartbreak, personal experience, and social concerns through detailed, story-driven songs.

Born and raised in Maine, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship while becoming active in Boston’s open-mic scene. His breakthrough followed a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriting competition and a connection with folk artist Bill Morrissey, who produced Paul’s 1993 independent album, *Say Something*. He subsequently signed a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and released *Stories* in 1994.

Paul has released 23 albums and maintained an extensive international touring career. His songs have appeared in films including *Me, Myself, and Irene*, *Shallow Hal*, and *Hall Pass*, and have been recorded by country artists such as Sugarland, Kristian Bush, and Jack Ingram. His honors include the Kerrville New Folk Award, 15 Boston Music Awards, an honorary doctorate from the University of Maine, and the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year award. His album *The Storyteller’s Suitcase* was also named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. His album *55*, released on his Rosella Records imprint, reflects on gratitude during the pandemic and amid political division.
