Ellis Paul
Ellis Paul performs with Shanna in a Dress at Jammin Java. The concert is part of the Jammin Java/Union Stage Presents 25th anniversary series, with commemorative merchandise available through the anniversary gift shop.
A Maine native and longtime Boston songwriter, Paul is known for narrative folk songs that explore personal experiences, social concerns, love, loss, and the lives of the people he encounters. His influences include Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Woody Guthrie. He began performing on Boston’s open-mic circuit while attending Boston College, later winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriting competition and working with folk artist Bill Morrissey, who produced Paul’s 1993 independent album, *Say Something*.
Paul subsequently signed a seven-album deal with Rounder Records and released *Stories* in 1994. Across a career spanning 23 albums and extensive international touring, his songs have appeared in films including *Me, Myself & Irene*, *Shallow Hal*, and *Hall Pass*, while country artists such as Sugarland, Kristian Bush, and Jack Ingram have recorded his work. His honors include the Kerrville New Folk Award, 15 Boston Music Awards, an honorary doctorate from the University of Maine, and the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year award. His album *The Storyteller’s Suitcase* was also named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. His album *55*, released on his Rosella Records label, addresses gratitude during the difficult period of the pandemic and an era of political division.
