Resistance, Resilience, and Response: A Retrospective Exhibition
Resistance, Resilience, and Response: A Retrospective Exhibition is a major solo show by acclaimed Washington, DC artist Rik Freeman, presented at Honfleur Gallery from June 19 through August 1, 2026. The exhibition brings together works from three of Freeman’s most significant series—The Chittlin Circuit Review, BAHIA!, and Black Beaches During Segregation—to explore themes of perseverance, cultural expression, and collective memory. Opening on Juneteenth and running through the nation’s 250th anniversary summer, the exhibition serves as Freeman’s artistic response to the current social and political climate while reflecting on more than three decades of work rooted in Black history, culture, identity, and resilience.
In addition to selections from these three series, the exhibition features the debut of a new painting, *What’s Going On*, inspired by Marvin Gaye’s landmark 1971 album. The work draws connections between the social issues Gaye addressed and contemporary challenges. As Freeman notes, “Resistance, resilience, and response have been central to the experiences of Black communities throughout history, and they remain essential today.” This retrospective highlights the enduring power of art as a tool for reflection and social commentary.
