The River is Alive

The River is Alive is a solo exhibition by Pat Silbert featuring paintings that explore rivers as living entities and humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world. Inspired in part by Robert Macfarlane’s book *Is a River Alive?*, Silbert’s work seeks to encourage a sense of peace and a deeper appreciation for the vitality of the earth.

The exhibition also incorporates Buddhist symbolism, reflecting the belief that humans, animals, and plants are related and share a responsibility to care for one another. Silbert’s 2026 paintings respond to environmental changes observed in southern New Hampshire, including dying paper-bark birches, declining songbird populations, and the increasing vulnerability of living beings as the planet warms.
