Ariel Quartet & Orion Weiss
Phillips Music’s 86th season opens with the Ariel Quartet and pianist Orion Weiss, both making highly anticipated Phillips debuts. Framed around the season’s themes of friendship and artistic exchange, the concert pairs Caroline Shaw’s luminous *Blueprint* with Brahms’s deeply expressive First String Quartet and Dohnányi’s lush Piano Quintet.
The Ariel Quartet was formed by musicians who met as teenagers at Jerusalem’s Academy Middle School of Music and Dance. The ensemble, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023, has won the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Cleveland Quartet Award, and other international prizes. It is the Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where its members direct the chamber music program. Weiss is an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician who has received an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and who regularly collaborates with major orchestras, festivals, and chamber ensembles.

Program: Caroline Shaw, *Blueprint*; Johannes Brahms, String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 51, comprising four movements; and Ernő Dohnányi, Piano Quintet in C minor, Op. 1, No. 1.
Intermission: The concert includes an intermission between the Brahms quartet and the Dohnányi quintet.

Ariel Quartet: The quartet is known for virtuosic, intense performances and extensive work on the complete Beethoven quartet cycle, which it has performed six times in the United States and Europe. Its collaborators have included pianists Orion Weiss, Jeremy Denk, and Menahem Pressler; cellists Paul Katz and Alisa Weilerstein; and the American, Pacifica, and Jerusalem String Quartets. The ensemble has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ravinia, Yellow Barn, Caramoor, and the Perlman Music Program, among other venues and festivals.
Orion Weiss: Weiss is recognized for his expressive playing, technical command, and work as both a recitalist and chamber musician. His collaborators have included violinists Augustin Hadelich, James Ehnes, and Akiko Suwanai, as well as the Ariel, Parker, and Pacifica Quartets. His recordings appear on labels including Naxos, Telos, Bridge, First Hand, Yarlung, and Artek. His *Arc* recital trilogy concluded with *Arc III* in 2025.
