50 Years of the British Brass Band
The Rockville Brass Band celebrates its 50th season with a Golden Jubilee concert highlighting the enduring tradition of British-style brass bands in Montgomery County. The program draws from classic British brass band literature as well as works composed or arranged for brass band since the ensemble’s founding in 1976, offering music with broad appeal for listeners of all ages.
Selections include Gustav Holst’s *First Suite in E-flat*, a work that combines lyrical passages, fanfares, and lively rhythmic motifs; Alexander Borodin’s dramatic *Danses Polovtsiennes* from *Prince Igor*, completed after Borodin’s death by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov; Stephen Bulla’s *Cityscapes*, which evokes morning streets, a museum visit, and nighttime city life; and Arthur Pryor’s *Bluebells of Scotland*, a virtuosic trombone feature for soloist David Lomotey.
The Rockville Brass Band is Maryland’s oldest continuously operating British-style brass band and one of the oldest in the United States. Its players include professional musicians, current and former military-band members, professionally trained music instructors, and dedicated amateur musicians. In addition to public performances and competitions, the band presents an annual music clinic and concert for students and seniors. Its work is supported by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the City of Rockville, local businesses, band members, and audience contributions.
