Introduction to Bookmaking: Sewn Structures

Introduction to Bookmaking: Sewn Structures is a one-day in-studio workshop at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center that teaches the fundamental skills of bookbinding, from materials and tools to two distinct book structures: a French Link Journal-Sketchbook with an exposed spine sewn binding, and a Single Section Case Bound Notebook that results in a small hard-covered book. Participants will learn how to sew signatures, properly cover boards, and gain an overview of essential tools in a basic bookbinding kit, as well as concepts for designing book content and structures. By the end of the session, students will be able to adapt these techniques for their own projects and have a solid foundation for further bookbinding exploration.

Instructor: Amaal Younes, a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and craft-based practitioner born in Cairo, Egypt, now based in Washington, DC. Her work explores materiality, storytelling, and the cultural intimacy of handmade objects, and she co-founded Grain Studio, a bookbinding and craft initiative.

Level: Beginner – no experience necessary.

Date and Time: Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Price: $184.00, which includes a $25 materials fee covering consumable supplies such as paper, thread, and glue.

What to Bring (optional): Personal apron (extras available), clothes that can get messy, notepad and pen for taking notes, and any personal tools you prefer (scissors, bonefolder, awl, ruler, X-acto knife, etc.); all necessary tools are provided.
