New Orthodox / Red Sunflower / Alma Laprida & Mike Kuhl
New Orthodox, Red Sunflower, and the collaboration of Alma Laprida with Mike Kuhl share an evening of minimalist, experimental, and improvisational music at Rhizome DC. New Orthodox uses pedal steel and voice to build intimate yet expansive pieces shaped by repetition, space, silence, sonic exploration, and reflective lyrics.
Red Sunflower is a Washington, DC instrumental trio made up of brothers Kiyan Saifi on guitar and Teymour Saifi on bass, alongside Jaden Shahin on drums. Their music combines noise, textural improvisation, experimental rock, punk energy, and free-music elements, emphasizing intensity and unpredictability.
The final set pairs Argentine multidisciplinary artist Alma Laprida with Baltimore drummer Mike Kuhl. Laprida works across composition, improvisation, performance, installation, instrument building, and radio-based art. Kuhl is a drummer, recording artist, educator, and Towson University jazz drum professor whose work spans jazz, experimental music, and collaborations with artists including Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Tony Malaby, Beach House, Tom Tom Club, and others.
