Featuring: Nikolaj Hess Trio, Nikolaj Hess

Nikolaj Hess Trio is a Sunday jazz concert at The Phillips Collection featuring Danish pianist and composer Nikolaj Hess with his trio. The program explores music inspired by the paintings of Mark Rothko and complements the museum exhibition *Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea*. Hess’s music brings together Nordic jazz, American post-bop, global rhythmic traditions, classical influences, Scandinavian folk, and West African music, moving between composed material and improvisation.

The performance reflects The Phillips Collection’s 2026–27 theme of relationships and creative exchange, drawing particularly on Rothko’s work and Hess’s long-running artistic investigation into the relationship between visual art and music. The concert is presented in partnership with the Embassy of Denmark in Washington, DC, and sponsored by the Galena-Yorktown Foundation.
