Blacktop Mojo
Blacktop Mojo brings its heavy, Southern-inflected rock to Pearl Street, blending sludgy grooves, classic-rock guitar riffs, Southern-metal intensity, and blues influences into a sound sometimes described as “Texas Grunge.” The band performs alongside Seven Year Witch and Bitter Luck.
Formed in late 2012 in Palestine, Texas, by vocalist Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, Blacktop Mojo released its debut album, *I Am*, in 2014. After years of playing dive bars, dance halls, and honky-tonks around Texas, the members left their day jobs while recording 2017’s *Burn the Ships* and lived together in a small house in Palestine, creating an environment of constant collaboration and creativity. The band has since maintained a demanding touring and recording schedule, with several songs reaching the Top 40 on the Mediabase and Billboard Rock charts. Their live performances emphasize an old-fashioned, fully played rock show with no laptops or backing tracks.
