Young Fresh Fellows w/Clem Fandango • Second show added!
Young Fresh Fellows return to Hank Dietle’s Tavern for a second show added after the first sold out. The veteran band will perform with Clem Fandango, the DMV group led by singer-songwriter and former Zamboni driver Peter Gilstrap. Their music combines energetic rock with thoughtful songwriting and draws on a wide range of influences.
The Young Fresh Fellows’ current work grew out of their 40th-anniversary tour and a spontaneous recording session at Wilco’s Loft studio in Chicago. With John Perrin of NRBQ on drums alongside Scott McCaughey, Jim Sangster, and Kurt Bloch, the band recorded much of the material quickly and organically. The resulting music moves through garage rock, piano-led ballads, jazz-inflected passages, and personal songs, with later arrangements featuring guests including Neko Case, Peter Buck, and members of Wilco and The Decemberists.
Clem Fandango’s Peter Gilstrap previously played in The Neighbors, Super Jones Affair, and Mother May I, sharing stages with artists such as NRBQ, Roy Orbison, Paul Westerberg, Smashing Pumpkins, and Marshall Crenshaw. He is joined by Bill Williams, Edward O’Connell, Scott McKnight, and Antoine Sanfuentes, whose past associations include Last Train Home, Jelly Roll Mortals, Dede and the Do-Rights, Little Red & the Renegades, the Half Smokes, and Kevin Johnson and the Linemen. The group performs Gilstrap’s original songs, influenced by Nick Lowe, George Jones, Burt Bacharach, The Move, The Replacements, and the early Beatles. Gilstrap and Young Fresh Fellows member Scott McCaughey also reportedly performed together in The Neighbors when that band shared a bill with the Fellows in Washington in the late 1980s.
