Gilt by Association
Gilt by Association is an exhibition examining the many cultural meanings attached to gilding and gold. It considers gold’s visual allure and associations with beauty, glory, honor, wealth, and status, while also exploring darker connections to avarice, repression, conflict, and guilt. The exhibition juxtaposes artworks to encourage visitors to form their own associations, including ideas of artifice, glitter, transcendence, and the promise of a “New Golden Age.”
The exhibition includes Lucy J. Blankstein’s *Solus Rex* and is presented in the rotunda of American University’s Katzen Arts Center.
