Andrew Roberts — Napoleon and His Marshals: Victory, Rivalry, Betrayal - with Michael F. Bishop

Wed, Nov 11, 2026at 7:00 PM
5015 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC
Free
Featuring: Andrew Roberts, Michael F. Bishop

Andrew Roberts presents *Napoleon and His Marshals: Victory, Rivalry, Betrayal* in conversation with historian Michael F. Bishop. Roberts explores the twenty-six marshals Napoleon appointed to lead his armies, examining how their ambition, rivalry, loyalty, and betrayal helped drive Napoleon’s military successes and shaped the fate of Europe.

The discussion places Napoleon’s rise and fall in the context of the French Revolution and his transformation of France through new laws, technologies, and approaches to government and education. Roberts considers whether Napoleon was a visionary genius or a tyrant, viewing him through the experiences of the marshals who fought to build his empire. The program also follows the marshals’ personal lives, the violent deaths of more than a quarter of them, and the fact that only two remained with Napoleon at Waterloo.

Roberts is the author of four *New York Times* bestsellers, including *Churchill: Walking with Destiny* and *Napoleon: A Life*. He is a distinguished visiting fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, a fellow of the Lehrman Institute at the New-York Historical Society, a member of the House of Lords, and an honorary citizen of Texas. Bishop, the conversation partner, is a historian, consultant, and ghostwriter who formerly led the International Churchill Society and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
