Solas Nua: Show in a Bag: Works in Progress

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, Solas Nua and Dublin’s Fishamble: The New Play Company team up for the second annual Show in a Bag: Works in Progress at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The program gives DC-area performing artists the chance to build a solo show with dedicated dramaturgical support, while rethinking how independent theatre gets made by putting the artists themselves in control of their work. Over six months, participants develop a solo script that can be performed anywhere, and this edition features three artists sharing work-in-progress readings of their new pieces.

The afternoon spotlights three distinct solo explorations. Dani Stoller presents *Stuffed or Tomorrow I Will Be Perfect*, a piece weaving together food, money, and intimacy as it follows one woman’s effort to heal addictive patterns and discover wholeness by allowing herself to feel empty. Lilli Hokoma offers a dreamlike solo work that circles around hair as a site of memory, pride, and shame, tracing a journey from a childhood love of *Twelfth Night* to a pandemic-era gender journey and the experience of playing Viola, all while examining gender as performance. Milo Longenecker closes the lineup with *Dance Yrself Clean, 1518*, a play with dance that connects the 1518 choreomania in Strasbourg to the power of communal ecstatic movement today, asking whether the ghosts of the medieval dancing plague might still speak through our bodies.
