Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier: UMD Symphony Orchestra

The UMD Symphony Orchestra, under music director David Neely, presents an orchestral program centered on Richard Strauss’s lush and romantic suite from *Der Rosenkavalier*, a work that evokes the charm of 18th-century Vienna through elegant waltzes and love music. The suite traces key scenes from the opera, including the moment the young lovers first meet and fall in love. The program also features Gabriela Ortiz’s vibrant *Antrópolis*, inspired by Mexico City’s 1980s club and bar scene, and Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano and Strings, a single-movement work that contrasts dissonance and tonality as it meditates on hope and despair before fading to silence. Pianist Guzal Isametdinova, winner of the 2025 UMSO Concerto Competition, performs the Schnittke with the orchestra.

Tickets: Regular admission is $30 plus a $5 booking fee; students and youth tickets are $10.
