Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier: UMD Symphony Orchestra

The UMD Symphony Orchestra, conducted by music director David Neely, presents a program centered on Richard Strauss’ lush and romantic *Der Rosenkavalier Suite*. The music evokes 18th-century Vienna through elegant waltzes and love scenes, including the moment when the story’s young lovers first meet and fall in love.

The concert also features Gabriela Ortiz’s *Antrópolis*, a four-movement reflection on Mexico City’s nightlife inspired by the clubs and bars known as “antros,” with each movement drawing on a distinct musical and dance style. Pianist Guzal Isametdinova, winner of the 2025 UMSO Concerto Competition, joins the orchestra for Alfred Schnittke’s single-movement *Concerto for Piano and String Orchestra*, a work that contrasts dissonance and tonality and moves between feelings of hope and despair before fading into silence.
