David Alan Miller Conducts Lincoln-DeCusatis, Nielsen & Strauss | NOI Philharmonic
Champion of American music David Alan Miller returns to the podium of the NOI Philharmonic for a provocative and contemplative program that pairs a world premiere with two early twentieth-century orchestral staples. The concert features the world premiere of Nathan Lincoln-DeCusatis’s *The River That Flows Both Ways*, a NOI+F commission that traces the course of the Hudson River from the Adirondacks to New York City in a surge of rhythmic energy. Richard Strauss’s tone poem *Don Juan*, based on the legendary Spanish libertine, opens the second half, and Carl Nielsen’s dramatic Symphony No. 4, “The Inextinguishable,” composed in 1916 against the backdrop of World War I, closes the program with its four unbroken movements and dueling timpani. Miller, a long-time collaborator of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, has led the Philharmonic on several Naxos “American Classics” recordings, including a 2018 Grammy-nominated album for Best Orchestral Performance.
