Le Chalet
Le Chalet is Adolphe Adam’s romantic and comic opéra-comique, set amid the picturesque Swiss Alps. The story follows Bettly, an independent young woman who has resisted marriage, and Daniel, the earnest farmer who loves her. When a mysterious traveler arrives at Bettly’s secluded chalet during a winter storm, a forged love letter, disguises, mistaken identities, and the arrival of soldiers create a chain of misunderstandings and clever matchmaking.
Presented by L’Opéra Comique de Washington, the intimate production features Adam’s sparkling melodies, Alpine atmosphere, humor, tenderness, and heartfelt romance. The evening begins with a special recital of French arias celebrating the French vocal tradition.
