Fall Jazz Combo Concerts
The Fall Jazz Combo Concerts at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center bring the UMD School of Music’s student jazz combos to the stage for two evenings of chamber jazz. The performances feature classic tunes played in an intimate setting, with a different lineup of combos and repertoire on each night, so audiences are encouraged to attend both shows. This is a free event presented by the University of Maryland’s jazz program, offering a close-up look at the young musicians who make up one of the region’s most active collegiate jazz scenes.
The UMD jazz ensembles include more than 100 students, and their reach extends well beyond campus. The premier UMD Jazz Ensemble appears regularly at off-campus events, including the Maryland Music Educators Association annual conference and local jazz festivals, and is one of three elite bands selected to perform each year at the Calvin Jones Big Band Jazz Festival, a much-anticipated event on Washington, D.C.’s jazz calendar. The program's combos and big bands also perform outreach concerts at venues such as the National Archives, public libraries, the National Building Museum, and area schools, as well as at campus events like Maryland Day, galas, and commencement activities. Because seating is limited for these popular jazz performances, admission is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
