Hunter Brown / Alma Laprida / Lustre Chantant

Hunter Brown, Alma Laprida, and Lustre Chantant share an evening of experimental music at Rhizome DC. The program brings together synthetic sound, computational and spatial audio, improvisation, unusual instruments, radiophonic work, and sound-making from obsolete electronics and discarded materials.

Berlin-based musician and sound artist Hunter Brown investigates how digital sound representations, audio technology, computational abstraction, machine learning, synthesis, and listening shape auditory experience. Improvisation is central to his performances, including solo appearances with his custom SuperCollider-based Improvisation Instrument and collaborative work with Technical Reserve and Other Plastics. His work has been presented internationally at venues, festivals, conferences, and universities including Ars Electronica, Big Ears, Café OTO, IRCAM Manifeste, Experimental Sound Studio, Lobe 4DSOUND, and KM28. Brown is also a freelance audio engineer, the technical director of Ensemble Dal Niente, a co-founder of Party Perfect records, and a former electronic-music instructor at Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Chicago.

Alma Laprida works across composition, improvisation, performance, installation, instrument construction, and radiophonic pieces. Her practice is particularly associated with the tromba marina, a rare string instrument used primarily from the Middle Ages through the Baroque period.

Lustre Chantant consists of musician, artist, and instrument maker Max Hamel alongside photographer and DIY advocate Christopher Griffiths. Their performances use battery-powered amplifiers, discarded shrapnel, and obsolete electronics to create an improvised sonic séance inspired by the contents of a kitchen junk drawer.
