Patricia Williams: Transformations and Importations

Patricia Williams’s *Transformations and Importations* examines how creative ideas travel across time, traditions, and artistic forms. The exhibition follows a chain of musical reinterpretations, from a secular love song dating to around 1600, through Bach’s Christian passion hymn of 1656 and Tom Glazer’s 1947 protest song, to Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1970) and “American Tune” (1973).

Williams transforms this musical lineage into visual art. Some paintings translate musical notation into shapes and colors, while others respond to the music’s emotional and intellectual meaning.
