Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot, the Tony-winning musical comedy, comes to Olney Theatre Center’s Bernard Family Theatre as part of the 2026-27 season. Based on the classic 1959 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film that starred Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe, this stage adaptation revives the beloved story with music and lyrics by Hairspray creators Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, plus a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew Lopez and Late Night star Amber Ruffin. Set in the Prohibition era, it follows two 1930s jazz musicians who go on the run from the mob disguised as women, joining an all-female band headed to California. Joe and Jerry become Josephine and Daphne, befriend the band’s star singer Sugar Kane, and find themselves transformed in ways the 1950s film could never make explicit. The production is described as a tap-heavy, dance-intensive spectacle with a comic heart of gold, rooted in the idea that the humor comes not from men in dresses but from idiots in trouble.
