Transcendent Terrains: Outer Landscapes and Inner Temples
Transcendent Terrains: Outer Landscapes and Inner Temples is a solo exhibition by Sarah Spector featuring vividly colored abstract landscapes, expressive compositions, shimmering color-field paintings, collages, and a substantial series of miniature landscapes depicting Block Island. The works investigate the transformation of light, the tension between tangible surfaces and fleeting atmospheric effects, and the artist’s enduring interest in abstraction.
Spector’s acrylic paintings use transparent, translucent, and opaque marks layered into visible traces and revisions. Her collages developed through playful experimentation and chance, while the Block Island watercolors reflect both the island’s landscape and the spontaneity of working outdoors, sometimes from the roadside. The exhibition includes works titled “Blue Orb,” “Blue Smoke Hovering,” “Celebration,” “Couches de Brouillard,” “Mahatma,” and “Prayers.”
