Hungarian National Dance Ensemble: Land of the Free
The Hungarian National Dance Ensemble’s *Land of the Free* tells the story of Mihály Fabriczy Kováts, a Hungarian hussar whose life connected Hungary with the emerging United States. The performance begins in a lively 18th-century Hungarian market town during military recruitment, where music, dancing, and hussar traditions surround Kováts as he volunteers for service.
His journey takes him to Maria Theresa’s imperial court in Vienna, where aristocratic etiquette clashes humorously with the spirited character of the Hungarian hussars. After experiencing the hardships and disappointments of military life, Kováts leaves Europe for the New World. He reaches America in 1777, encounters new communities and dance traditions, and joins the fight for independence, ultimately giving his life in battle. The production uses Hungarian and American imagery, including the two countries’ flags, to reflect his legacy and the shared ideal of freedom.
