1960s Washington: Turbulence and Community — Leonard Jewler

Leonard Jewler’s solo exhibition "1960s Washington: Turbulence and Community" presents a photographic exploration of Washington, D.C., during a period of profound social upheaval and everyday resilience. The show, on view at the Stone Tower Gallery in Glen Echo Park, features fifteen archival pigment prints taken with a single-lens reflex film camera and converted to digital format. The photographs are organized into three thematic sets: the aftermath of the 1968 riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the 1969 demonstration against the inauguration of Richard Nixon; and scenes of neighborhood life in the city in 1969. Jewler, who lived in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood when he took these images, aims to capture both the abstract beauty of everyday scenes and the deeper import of moments, adhering to the philosophies of photographers Berenice Abbott and Minor White. His biography notes a lifelong interest in photography, pursued more purposefully after retiring in 2015 from a career as a technology consultant and manager; he studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art and Photoworks (Glen Echo Park’s resident photography program).
