"World Music Reimagined" featuring Spyros Koliavasilis with Gary Prince
“World Music Reimagined” brings oud and kemane player Spyros Koliavasilis together with jazz guitarist Gary Prince for an improvisational performance drawing on Mediterranean, Balkan, jazz, and other musical traditions. The duo reshapes music from multiple regions into a program centered on cultural connection, contrast, and shared musical ideas.
The performance may pair unexpected songs, sounds, and instruments while exploring links between traditional music and contemporary styles. Koliavasilis brings his Greek heritage, extensive experience with European and Mediterranean music, and life in the United States; Prince contributes his jazz and electric-guitar background along with a strong interest in Balkan and Klezmer music. The result is intended to be personal, deeply informed, and responsive to the moment.
Koliavasilis is an internationally recognized performer, educator, researcher, and teacher specializing in the musical traditions of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. He received the 2025 Maryland Heritage Award and has performed, presented, and taught throughout the United States and internationally. Prince is a guitarist and music educator focused on jazz, improvisation, and contemporary styles. He teaches Upper School instrumental music at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville and previously served as Jazz Program Chair and a jazz guitar faculty member at Levine Music in Washington, D.C. He holds music degrees from the University of Michigan.
