Introduction to Papermaking
Introduction to Papermaking is a beginner-friendly, in-studio workshop led by calligrapher and craftsman Josh Berer. Participants will learn the core techniques of Western-style handmade papermaking, from preparing pulp and forming sheets to couching, pressing, and drying them.
The class also introduces decorative and production-related methods, including pigments, inclusions, layering, shaped deckles, sizing, retention agents, and formation aid. No previous experience is required, making the session suitable both for newcomers and for papermakers seeking a refresher.

He holds an ijazah, or master calligrapher’s certification, in the Thuluth and Naskh scripts from Mohamed Zakariya and is studying Talik script. His broader practice includes papermaking, marbling, illumination, bookbinding, and woodworking, and he speaks Arabic, Persian, and Turkish.
Materials: Registration includes all materials needed for class, including a $30 materials fee.
What to Bring: Optional supplies include a personal waterproof apron, note paper and a pen, and gloves for anyone sensitive to prolonged contact with water. Rubber boots or comfortable shoes with good tread are recommended because participants will be on their feet for much of the day and the studio floor may become wet.
Participant Notes: Previous attendees have praised the workshop for inspiring a new interest in papermaking and for its small-group format, which has allowed for a friendly atmosphere and individualized assistance.
