Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront

Members are invited to preview *Esther Bubley: Photographing the Homefront* before its public opening. The exhibition explores the life and work of Esther Bubley (1921–1998), a Jewish documentary photographer and daughter of immigrants who worked for the Office of War Information during World War II.

While stationed in the nation’s capital, Bubley photographed students at Wilson High School, now Jackson-Reed High School, and followed uniformed soldiers through locations including Loew’s Theater, Glen Echo amusement park, and Dissin’s Jewish boarding house, where her sister lived. Her evocative black-and-white images capture a bustling Washington welcoming thousands of new residents and experiencing rapid urban change. The exhibition pairs her photographs with artifacts from the Capital Jewish Museum collection that illuminate the city during this pivotal period.
