Allyn Johnson Organ Trio - Hammond B3 Week
Allyn Johnson, a native Washingtonian, leads an organ trio during Blues Alley’s Hammond B3 Week. A jazz musician, composer, arranger, producer, and educator, Johnson is known for an improvisational style marked by brilliance and strength. He began playing piano at age five, first performing with his uncle’s church youth choir, where he developed his musical abilities.
While studying at the University of the District of Columbia, Johnson was mentored by jazz legend Calvin Jones. He became the first recipient of UDC’s Felix E. Grant Scholarship Award in jazz performance and graduated magna cum laude in 1997 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. He later served as an adjunct music professor and assistant director of UDC’s Jazz Studies program before succeeding Jones as its director in 2005.
