District Treasures: Celebrating Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Thu, Jul 16, 2026at 11:00 AM
1400 Constitution Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC
Free

This daytime event at the National Museum of African American History and Culture celebrates the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities by inviting visitors to bring family treasures and heirlooms for a one-on-one professional review with preservation specialists. Participants receive insight into the historical significance of their items and learn best practices for preserving personal collections, with a special emphasis on objects related to HBCU history, traditions, student life, athletics, and community legacy. Inspired by the museum’s exhibition *At the Vanguard: Making and Saving History at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)*, the session encourages attendees to bring any cherished family objects, photographs, documents, textiles, quilts, books, or collectibles. All registered visitors receive a Treasures Starter Kit and sample archival supplies to begin preserving their own family history collections at home.

When: Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Tickets: Free, but registration is required to attend a one-on-one session with preservation specialists.

Venue: 2nd Floor Classrooms at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, D.C.

Note: The event is specifically designed for families, classmates, and friends, and while items related to HBCU history are especially encouraged, any cherished family objects are welcome for review. Each attendee will receive a Treasures Starter Kit and sample archival supplies.
