ERIC ROBERSON

Eric Roberson brings his independent R&B and soul music to The Birchmere. The GRAMMY Award-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and Howard University alumnus is recognized as a pioneer of the independent R&B movement and has built a career around creating “Honest Music” outside the major-label system.

Roberson has spent more than two decades writing, producing, and performing, including work with Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, Vivian Green, and many other artists. His career includes sold-out national tours, GRAMMY nominations, a BET Award nomination as the first independent artist recognized in that category, and the 2008 BETJ Virtual Award for Underground Artist of the Year, shared with Rahsaan Patterson.

Music: Roberson’s performance draws from his catalog of independent R&B and soul music, including material created over more than 20 years.

Career: Roberson has released 13 solo albums and has continued developing his independent artistic model since 2001. In 2019, he joined Berklee College of Music as a professor, describing the role as an opportunity to teach while continuing to learn from students.

Recent Work: During the isolation of 2020, Roberson created *Hear from Here*, a ten-song album recorded in approximately four weeks. He described the project as an act of service for listeners seeking hope. The album includes the energetic “Road to Recovery” and “Omaha,” which highlight his rapping as well as his singing, and concludes with “Shining,” featuring fellow United Tenors member Brian Courtney Wilson.

Creative Process: While making the *Earth, Wind & Fire* trilogy in 2017, Roberson launched “The Process,” a forum where fans could hear and comment on unreleased music as it was being developed. The project was intended to restore a more participatory music-listening culture by allowing audiences to follow the making of an album.

Additional Work: Roberson’s 2021 single “Lessons” was inspired by perseverance, setbacks, patience, and his relationship with his wife, Shawn. The song was recorded on the morning of their 12th wedding anniversary.
