Shiner
Shiner brings its long-running, genre-resistant rock to Pearl Street, performing with Bursting and Hungry Bug. Active since the early 1990s, Shiner is known for combining punishing heaviness with melody while continually reshaping its sound. The band’s newer material, including its latest album, *BELIEVEYOUME*, is described as more open, immediate, and instinctive than the darker, more claustrophobic character of its 2020 release, *Schadenfreude*.
*BELIEVEYOUME* grew from phone recordings and spontaneous, largely live studio performances at bassist and engineer Paul Malinowski’s Massive Sound studio in Kansas City. Guitarist Josh Newton added guitars and keyboards in Kansas City and Los Angeles, while vocalist and guitarist Allen Epley recorded vocals at his Chicago home studio. Occasional touring member and mixer Mario Quintero of Spotlights and Malinowski completed the mixes, with mastering by Mike Nolte at Eureka Mastering in Portland. The result combines Shiner’s established weight and intensity with a more expansive, less brooding approach.
Hungry Bug, from Washington, DC, joins the bill with music built around raw, relentless energy. Their album *Allura* draws inspiration from Thee Oh Sees, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Ty Segall, and their live performances are characterized as intensely physical and danceable, though not necessarily safely so.
