Out of Bounds
Out of Bounds is a group exhibition presented by The Kreeger Museum and Hamiltonian Artists, featuring work by Hamiltonian alumni Selin Balci, Larry W. Cook, Joyce Yu-Jean Lee, Christie Neptune, Allison Spence, Kyle Tata, and Jing (Ellen) Xu. Working across painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation, the artists explore what happens when people question, cross, or redraw established boundaries.
The exhibition takes its title from the language of sport, where “out of bounds” marks the area beyond the limits of play. The featured artists consider boundaries as rules and structures that can both include and exclude, asking who has the authority to define and enforce them and what new possibilities emerge through disruption, spontaneity, and risk. Their work is shown alongside selected pieces from The Kreeger Museum’s permanent collection by Sam Gilliam, Frank Stella, Simmie Knox, and William Christenberry, artists recognized for challenging conventional approaches to geometry, materials, figuration, representation, and subject matter.
