Beverly Pepper: Land Art and Monumental Sculptures

Beverly Pepper: Land Art and Monumental Sculptures examines more than seven decades of work by Beverly Pepper (1922–2020), an artist known for rethinking large-scale sculpture through hands-on experimentation with iron, steel, and earth. The exhibition brings together gallery-sized sculptures from the National Museum of Women in the Arts collection, models for monumental works, and a new film about Pepper’s large-scale projects.

The exhibition considers Pepper’s interest in the relationship between sculpture and its surroundings, in both rural and urban settings. It is presented in conjunction with Beverly Pepper: Ten Monumental Sculptures, an outdoor installation along New York Avenue directly outside the museum. Together, the projects offer visitors an opportunity to explore Pepper’s approaches to land art, public sculpture, and monumental form.

Related outdoor installation: Beverly Pepper: Ten Monumental Sculptures is installed along New York Avenue outside NMWA. The outdoor project is part of the New York Avenue Sculpture Corridor.

New York Avenue Sculpture Corridor: Established in 2010 by NMWA and the DowntownDC Business Improvement District, the corridor presents distinguished public artworks to enliven and enrich downtown Washington, D.C.
