Beverly Pepper: Land Art and Monumental Sculptures

Beverly Pepper: Land Art and Monumental Sculptures is a focus exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts that highlights the career of Beverly Pepper (1922–2020), who for more than seven decades explored innovative approaches to large-scale sculpture using iron, steel, and earth—materials historically associated with male artists. The exhibition emphasizes Pepper’s concern with the essential relationship between sculpture and its environment, whether rural or urban. The indoor presentation features gallery-scaled sculptures from the museum’s collection, maquettes for larger works, and a new film documenting the artist’s monumental projects. Complementing this is an outdoor installation, Beverly Pepper: Ten Monumental Sculptures, situated along New York Avenue directly outside the museum, part of the New York Avenue Sculpture Corridor program established in 2010 by NMWA and the DowntownDC Business Improvement District to enrich the city’s downtown area with distinguished public artworks.

Venue: National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., with the companion outdoor installation on New York Avenue adjacent to the museum.
