Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company. For more than 30 years, choreographer and Company Founder Dana Tai Soon Burgess has optimized the language of dance to explore the universal vicissitudes of the human experience. A fourth-generation Korean American, Dana takes inspiration from his own ancestors, his immediate family, his own experiences and the Company around him to explore the themes of identity, belonging and home. DANA TAI SOON BURGESS is the first ever choreographer in residence of the Smithsonian Institution (2016-2023). His interest in the intersection of the visual arts and dance has resulted in commissions from the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Kreeger Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the University of New Mexico Art Museum and the Noguchi Museum, among others. Burgess is the founding artistic director of Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC), Washington, DC’s premiere modern dance company.

But DC’s Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company is at the forefront of a movement to make modern dance more collaborative with other art forms. There is a lot of stillness, and very little of the two dancers' movements are synchronized. By leaning into the collaborative method, the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company is able to fully explore a theme and present it to the audience in an accessible way, while still keeping that special weirdness emblematic of modern dance.
In honor of Asian American Heritage Month, Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC) triumphantly returns to Woolly Mammoth with their signature grace in storytelling. # An Asian American Dance journey. The Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company creates and performs modern dances that explore diverse perspectives, histories, and traditions. The Company will perform the world premiere of “Drawing in Space” – a dance homage to the inveterate artist, Ruth Asawa. Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company. Originally choreographed by Burgess for Ballet Memphis, Meditations is a full-company work that celebrates the Asian American community through sublime phrasing and breathtaking elegance of movement set to music by Lou Harrison. *Drawing in Space* (2026) \*\*\**A World Premiere*\*\*\*.
