Campeón Gabacho

Campeón Gabacho is a visually inventive drama from Mexican filmmaker Jonás Cuarón. Liborio, a Mexican immigrant who has crossed the Rio Grande seeking a better life, arrives in New York with nothing and finds work and shelter with a hard-edged bookshop owner. After Liborio intervenes when Aireen is attacked on the street, a video of his act of kindness goes viral through influencer Doble-Ú’s social media feed, unexpectedly launching him into the world of boxing. The film explores love, resilience, migration, displacement, and transnational identity.

The film stars Juan Daniel García Treviño as Liborio, with Eddie Marsan, Leslie Grace, Rosario Dawson, Rubén Blades, and Cheech Marin in supporting roles. It received the Audience Award at the 2026 SXSW Film Festival. The October 2 screening includes a conversation with filmmaker Jonás Cuarón and a post-screening reception sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Institute.
