Celebrating American Art
The National Gallery of Art presents "Celebrating American Art," a comprehensive reinstallation of its American art galleries in the West Building. This refreshed presentation invites visitors to explore how artists have told the American story from the colonial era through the 20th century, featuring iconic masterpieces alongside less-familiar works. Highlights include John Singleton Copley’s "Watson and the Shark," Gilbert Stuart’s "George Washington," Thomas Cole’s "The Voyage of Life" series, Hiram Powers’ "The Greek Slave," and Bessie Potter Vonnoh’s "Day Dreams." The galleries incorporate new interpretive texts, digital tools, and hands-on activities designed for visitors of all ages, offering a renewed perspective on the nation's artistic heritage.
When: Ongoing from March 1, 2026, during regular museum hours (currently 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. daily, with select late nights at the Sculpture Garden).
