Camerata Nordica

Camerata Nordica, the acclaimed Swedish chamber orchestra, brings its innovative string octet to Dumbarton Concerts Gallery for a Nordic winter concert experience. Known for performing without a conductor, without chairs, and often without sheet music, the ensemble delivers a dynamic and intimate program that blends Scandinavian folk songs with classical masterworks. The concert features traditional Swedish folk tunes, Mozart’s Grande Sestetto Concertante (arranged for octet), a contemporary piece by Hanna Helgregen inspired by the natural beauty of the Nordic seasons, and Reinhold Glière’s String Octet in D Major. The octet, composed of principal players from the orchestra, performs from memory, showcasing deep musical connection and virtuosity.

Lineup: The touring string octet comprises principal players from Camerata Nordica, a chamber orchestra founded in 1974 in Kalmar, Sweden. The ensemble has collaborated with renowned artists such as Norbert Brainin, Levon Chilingirian, Pekka Kuusisto, and Antje Weithaas, and has performed at the BBC Proms (2013) and across Europe, the Americas, and Canada.
