Orquesta Akokán - Cuban Jazz Series
Orquesta Akokán brings its richly arranged Cuban mambo and jazz to Blues Alley as part of the Cuban Jazz Series. Named for a Yoruba word meaning “from the heart,” the ensemble was formed by a standout group of musicians associated with legendary Cuban bands including Los Van Van and Irakere.
Led by Chulo Records producer Jacob Plasse and pianist-arranger Michael Eckroth, Orquesta Akokán made its debut on Daptone Records in 2018 with a modern interpretation of the classic mambo traditions of Pérez Prado and Benny Moré. The group received a Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Latin Album. Its later albums, including 2021’s *16 Rayos* and 2024’s *Caracoles*, push the style toward avant-garde experimentation and incorporate Congolese spiritual influences. The band’s work has earned recognition from Billboard Latin Music, Telemundo, and Songlines. The performance is co-presented with the Embassy of Cuba.
