Rockville Musical Theatre presents *Caroline, or Change*, a Tony-nominated musical set in 1963 Louisiana during a pivotal period in American history. Jeanine Tesori’s score combines blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies with Tony Kushner’s deeply personal story about race, class, family, friendship, and social change.

In Lake Charles, African-American maid Caroline Thibodeaux works for the white Gellman family while raising four children as a single mother. She forms a delicate friendship with Noah, the family’s young son. When Noah’s stepmother, Rose, cannot afford to give Caroline a raise, she tells Caroline she may keep the money Noah leaves in his pockets. Caroline refuses to take money from a child, even as her family struggles to afford food, clothing, and shoes. Their conflict unfolds against the backdrop of major social advances taking shape beyond the family’s laundry room. The production is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, which also supplies the authorized performance materials.
