Beyond Words: The Sacred Art of Ayesha Kamal

Sat, Sep 5, 2026 – Sun, Dec 6, 2026
4400 Massachusetts Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC
Free

Beyond Words: The Sacred Art of Ayesha Kamal presents large-scale mixed-media paintings by internationally exhibited contemporary Islamic calligrapher Ayesha Kamal. Drawing from Islamic artistic traditions, verses of the Holy Qur’an, and Asma-ul-Husna—the Beautiful Names of Allah—Kamal transforms sacred text into immersive visual experiences through intricate calligraphy, expressive textures, luminous metallic elements, and richly layered compositions.

The exhibition considers the relationship between faith, artistic expression, and cultural heritage. By treating sacred writing as both language and visual form, Kamal’s work invites contemplation of beauty, spirituality, shared humanity, and the ways artistic traditions can evolve across cultures and generations. The presentation is organized by Hummingbird Film Studios and encourages visitors of all levels of familiarity with Arabic calligraphy to encounter it as a contemporary art form and a universal means of connection.
