Walking Tour: Woodley Park Historic District
This guided walking tour explores the history and architecture of Woodley Park, a residential neighborhood bordering the Connecticut Avenue corridor. The area takes its name from Philip Barton Key’s Federal-era mansion and expanded in the early 20th century after the Rock Creek ravine was crossed by the William Howard Taft Bridge, once known as the “Million Dollar Bridge.”
The tour also considers the work of developer Harry Wardman, who built his own residence, a hotel, and English Village-inspired row houses in the neighborhood. Other architects and builders whose contributions shaped Woodley Park include Hunter and Bell, Middaugh and Shannon, and Clarke Waggaman. The program is led by Martin Murray, a Woodley Park resident and Washington Walks guide.
