Hometown Treasures: Capital Region
Hometown Treasures: Capital Region brings the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s traveling preservation program to the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center for a single-day workshop and community expo. Attendees are invited to bring up to three family heirlooms or artifacts—such as photographs, letters, books, quilts, uniforms, dresses, textiles, ephemera, military memorabilia, and family records—for a one-on-one session with preservation specialists. The specialists will identify the items’ historical significance and provide practical advice on caring for them so they can be passed down to future generations. Alongside the one-on-one sessions, a Community Expo explores the living history of Scotland, Maryland, an African American community founded in 1880 by William Dove, a formerly enslaved farm worker. Local cultural, historical, and heritage organizations will offer preservation workshops, oral history training, interactive art and quilting demonstrations, and guided tours. The event is co‑sponsored by Glenstone Museum and the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation.
When: Friday, September 18, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Tickets: Free. Registration for one-on-one sessions is encouraged and opens on August 18, 2026. No registration is required for the Community Expo portion of the event.
