GERALD ALBRIGHT
Gerald Albright brings his signature saxophone and bass playing to The Birchmere for an evening of smooth jazz, contemporary R&B, and urban jazz. His music emphasizes varied textures, rhythms, chord progressions, and moods, reflecting a career that has moved across many areas of the genre.
A Los Angeles native, Albright studied at the University of Redlands before switching from saxophone to bass after seeing Louis Johnson perform. He joined Patrice Rushen’s band soon after graduating and later completed a tour as her bassist. During the 1980s, he became a sought-after session and touring musician, working with Anita Baker, Ray Parker Jr., Atlantic Starr, The Temptations, Maurice White, Les McCann, Teena Marie, the Winans, and Whitney Houston.
Albright began his solo career with *Just Between Us* in 1987 and went on to release charting albums including *Smooth*, *Groovology*, *Kickin’ It Up*, and *Sax for Stax*. He has participated in all-star tours such as Guitars & Saxes and Groovin’ For Grover, fronted a big band while touring with Phil Collins, and recorded *Pleasures of the Night* with Will Downing. His Grammy-nominated solo albums include *Pushing The Envelope* and *Slam Dunk*. He has also collaborated with Norman Brown on “24/7” and with Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, and Richard Elliot on *Summer Horns*, both of which received Grammy nominations for Best Pop Instrumental Album. More recently, he has toured with South African gospel and jazz singer-guitarist Jonathan Butler.
