Sad Girlz (Chicas Tristes)
Fernanda Tovar’s coming-of-age drama follows teenage best friends La Maestra and Paula, whose close, seemingly unbreakable friendship is tested after a party takes an unexpected and troubling turn. As Paula tries to act as though nothing happened, La Maestra seeks justice while struggling to determine how best to support her friend. Set against the girls’ swim-team routines, sleepovers, first romances, and the emotional turbulence of adolescence, the film explores girlhood, heartbreak, accountability, and the sustaining power of female friendship.
The film stars Rocío Guzmán and Darana Álvarez, whose performances and onscreen chemistry bring a warm, nostalgic perspective to Tovar’s raw examination of teenage life. Tovar received the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation section at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival. The film was also an official selection of the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival.
