Fernando Eimbcke’s dryly funny coming-of-age film follows Olmo, a teenager in 1979 New Mexico who is caught between caring for his bedridden father and pursuing the freedoms of adolescence. When his neighbor and crush, Nina, invites him to a party on the condition that he bring his father’s stereo, Olmo and his best friend Miguel set out on an increasingly desperate nighttime mission to obtain it.

The film balances adolescent awkwardness and deadpan humor with an affectionate, unsentimental portrait of family life. Olmo shares caregiving duties with his overworked mother, Cecilia, and his older sister Ana, who would rather be at the roller disco. With its bright, sun-filled visual style and disco soundtrack, the film explores family responsibility, identity, friendship, and the universal desire to belong. It was an official selection of the 2025 AFI FEST and Berlin film festivals.
